Information for refugees

The Protestant University of Applied Sciences in Bochum (EvH) supports refugees and other new immigrants on their way into and through studies in social and health care. An overview of our different degree programmes in the field of social and health services can be found here. Please note: All courses are taught in German and students need German language skills at C1 level.

We support prospective students... in their orientation by offering advice on studying and applying. In addition, we offer a guest student and tandem programme for networking with EvH students.

We support students… with counselling and support services during their studies, German courses, workshops and NRWege scholarships.

Guest auditor programme

You already have a good command of B2 German and still have time before applying or starting your studies? Then become a guest student at EvH! A guest auditor is a "trial study" for one semester, but without exams. You have the opportunity to take part in individual seminars, get to know the university and come into contact with other students. And you can check whether studying at the EvH meets your expectations.

The guest auditor programme is free of charge for people with little money (i.e. for most refugees). If you are unsure whether you will be exempt from the costs, please contact us.

Are you interested? Then contact Monika Hörr at international@evh-bochum.de, Tel: 0234 - 36901 - 142

Tandem Programme

In order to make it as easy as possible for refugees to start their studies at EvH, we try to provide guest students and international first-semester students with so-called tandem partners. These are students of the EvH who will be your contact person during your guest student period or your first semester - for questions about your studies and possibly also for questions about everyday life. You and your tandem partner decide on the amount of time and the intensity of the contact.

Further information can be found here: Tandem Programme

German courses during your studies

Are you already studying at EvH and realise that you could improve your German skills a little? Then take part in a study-accompanying German course (maximum 4 lessons/week) at our cooperation partner RUB. The courses on offer are varied and range from "Listening Comprehension" to "Argumentation in Studies" and "Scientific Writing". You can find all the courses here: https://www.daf.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/sbgk/Kursangebot_semesteruebergreifend.html.de
Participation is possible for refugees and other international students and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the programme "NRWege ins Studium".
Interested? Then register at the International Office at international@evh-bochum.de. All international students with and without a refugee background will receive an explicit invitation to register by e-mail at the end of February (for the summer semester) and at the end of August (for the winter semester).

Academic writing workshop

Once a semester, after registering for exams, the International Office offers a scientific writing workshop for refugees and other international students (2x 4 UE). Through exercises you will try out how to get into writing, how to develop a first idea for a topic and how to narrow it down further. You will learn how to draft the final research question, how to make an outline and what constitutes scientific language and scientific writing.

The compact format is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the "NRWege ins Studium" programme.

Interested? Then contact the International Office at international@evh-bochum.de. However, all international students with and without a refugee background will receive an explicit invitation to register by e-mail in April and October respectively.

Scholarships for refugees

As part of the "NRWege ins Studium" project of the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, EvH RWL awards scholarships for students with a refugee background.

The scholarships are aimed at particularly talented students with a refugee background who are highly motivated and likely to succeed in their studies. Further criteria for funding are financial need and social commitment.
