1 Social Work in contexts of migration and plural societies*

Germany as a reluctant country of immigration for the last 50 years has been changed by modernisation, the effects of pluralism, and immigration. In the last 3 years, the number of refugees and the challenges by forced migration have increased, not without consequences for social work. In addition, right-wing violence, militant fundamentalism, and neoracism have grown in reaction to the so-called "refugee crisis".

How has the rise of immigration impacted social work in Germany in the past, and what challenges do recent developments bring? This is the main topic of this seminar, which explores contexts and objectives of social work in terms of immigration; related topics, such as typologies and forms of im/migration, the term 'migrant society', various concepts of 'integration' and 'Intercultural Learning', will be discussed.

2 Community Work: Models for Practice*

Dr. Marichen van der Westhuizen, Lecturer in Social Work, Hugenote Kollege, Wellington, South Africa

Community work is seen as a social work method aimed at mezzo- and macro-levels of service delivery (i.e. working with groups and communities). In this seminar, four modules will be presented in terms of characteristics, when to use the model (contextual needs) and a process to follow. Specific techniques relevant to each model will be described to ensure that students will develop skills to implement the different models in different contexts (international/global social work).

3 Inclusion policy - a South African Perspective*

The Apartheid regime prior to the new democracy in 1994 in South Africa constructed and engineered social, political and economic policies and laws based on racial segregation and discrimination. After 1994, the new democratic government of South Africa, with its Reconstruction and Development Policy, the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, No.108 of 1996, and Bill of Rights paved the way for the rights of all persons and sought to afford them dignity, equality and inclusion. Despite our challenges and the slow implementation of policies, South Africa remains a country which offers a great example in policy development and laws to facilitate inclusion and to accommodate diversity of all persons from different cultures, religions, gender, disability and race.

4 Expanding humanities’ reach: technology, science and the future society*

Prof. Dr. Elke Hemminger, Professor for Sociology

Not only society as a whole but also individuals are today closely connected to scientific findings and cutting-edge technology. However, the knowledge about both possible and probable future scenarios – and the authority to make appropriate decisions in this regard –

seem to be handled by a small minority of people. This course considers current technological and scientific developments (e.g. augmented reality devices, brain-computer-interfaces, artificial intelligence etc.) and asks questions about their societal and ethical implications. Taken as thought experiments, these exemplary questions can open new perspectives on the ways we might wish to design a better society.

5 Working with Teenagers: Challenges and How to Overcome them**

Ekaterina Shadrova, PhD in Education, Associate Professor at Volodga State University, Russia

Adolescence is considered to be one of the most challenging age periods, in particular among teenagers at risk. This seminar will focus on difficulties social workers may have while interacting with teenagers and how to deal with them. The input material of the seminar is based on the research carried out among teenagers in institutional care in Russia. Our workshops will aim to develop students’ awareness about how to interpret and manage teenagers’ behaviour more effectively, as well as how to manage their own responses to these behaviours and how to develop a constructive language for handling challenging situations. Through discussions and practical activities participants will explore the ways social workers can contribute to building positive relationships and help adolescents in diverse contexts.

6 Contextual Site Visits for Social Work Practice in Bochum**

Prof. Dr. Mark S. Burrows, Professor for Historical Theology

This seminar involves site-visits in the Ruhr Metropolitan Region to facilities and agencies involved with a variety of programs and approaches to Social Work, including counselling centers and agencies that work with children and youth, persons with addictions, the elderly, refugees, and so forth. A theoretical component will accompany these visits.

7 The Child Protection Training Programme “MAPChiPP”**

Prof. Dr. Brigitta Goldberg, Professor of Youth Services and Criminal Justice

In this lecture the train-the-trainer programme MAPChiPP (Multi-disciplinary Assessment and Participation of Children in Child Protection Proceedings) is presented. The programme was developed by partners from five European countries. In purpose of teaching child protection professionals in different disciplines, the programme is available in the internet in different languages for free (after registration: www.mapchipp.com). The programme mainly focuses on the principles of participation and cooperation.

8 Principles of Public Health

Dr. Shoma Berkemeyer, Methodology

As an introductory course on public health, the focus of this module in the Summer Semester 2018 is on practice-oriented problem-solving in the public health sector. You will be presented with health-sector’s societal challenges and will work out approaches to probable solutions in various settings. An opportunity to compare public health across nations will be also provided. There will be a practice-based written exam at the end of the course. Courses will take place on selected weekend days and some week days. Opportunity for individual-based learning is given, which in student community group based learning can be operationalized with practice examples.

9 Theories and Concepts of Diversity

Dr. Fabian van Essen, Lecturer for Disability and Inclusion Studies

During this course, students will be introduced to theories and concepts of diversity in the context of healthcare. Methodologically, we approach diversity issues such as the diversities of migration, poverty, disability, care and sexual orientation by discussing relevant literature, offering intercultural training sessions, and participating in joint excursions to the life-worlds of the various diversity groups such as religious institutions (mosques, Hindu temples, etc.), disadvantaged neighbourhoods, disability workshops, or memory parks for people with dementia, etc.
