International Study Programme 2024

Social Complexities and Creative Approaches: Diversity, Disability, Sustainability

Each summer semester, the EvH RWL offers an interdisciplinary semester-long programme in English for exchange students of Social Work, Welfare, and Inclusion, as well as related areas: the International Study Programme (ISP).


The programme 2024 at a glance:

  • Semester programme in English at Bachelor level
  • Earn up to 30 ECTS credits in a blend of semester-long seminars and compact courses
  • Exchange and connect with German and international students
  • Get insights from local practitioners and researchers as well as experts from our partner universities worldwide in an interdisciplinary setting

Dates
3 April – 26 July, 2024 (including exams); slight changes are still possible.

Contents
A blend of semester-long seminars and compact courses, classroom seminars and practical workshops, visits to local and regional agencies and facilities of social work and health care, divided into three ‘modules’ or focus areas, as follows:

Artistic Education and Media Competence (12 ECTS)

  • Film as an Ethical Experience
  • Intercultural Work and the Arts
  • Dance Theatre Project: My Space Your Space

Intercultural and International Social Work (12ECTS)

  • Postcolonial Feminism and Movements of Freedom
  • International Talks on Human Rights: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Social Problems
  • Social Psychology: An Introduction to Group Building and Group Thinking

Health, Disability, Diversity (6 ECTS)

  • Diversity and Inclusion: A South African Perspective
  • Disability and Diversity: Inclusion in an International Perspective
  • Contextual Site Visits for Social Work Practice

Additionally, there will be an ‘Anchor Seminar’ which offers thematic grounding for the programme, academic skills training and input from various guest lecturers, as well as a German language course.

Finances and living
There are no tution fees, but there is a student contribution of approx. 360 euros which covers student services and a public transport ticket for the whole state of North-Rhine-Westphalia.

Funding for EU students: You may apply for Erasmus+ funding via your home university.

Funding for Non-EU students: In order to give students from non-European universities the opportunity to participate in the International Study Programme, EvH RWL is awarding the following scholarships for the programme 2024.

The International Office organises an introductory week, offers support with accommodation and administrative matters and arranges student assistants to support the students. Participants are responsible for organising their own daily life (leisure activities, meals, etc.).

Application
The programme is designed for students of Social Work, Welfare, and Inclusion, as well as related areas.

Applicants must have completed one year of undergraduate study, have English language skills of CEFR level B1 or better, and a home university that partners with EvH RWL.

Further information

The university
The Evangelische Hochschule Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe, Protestant University of Applied Sciences (or EvH RWL) educates students for careers in social work, education, diaconal and nursing care professions. Currently, six bachelor and two master degree programmes are offered, of which Social Work is the largest. Founded in 1971, the university is supported by the Protestant Churches in this region and is fully accredited by the State; with ca. 2,500 students, the EvH RWL is the largest of its kind in Germany. Protestant in origin and ethos, it is an intercultural, inclusive and family-friendly university with what students value as a warm and communicative atmosphere.

The city
Once a centre for European coal mining and steel production, Bochum is now widely known as a centre for education and research, healthcare management and new technologies. With its lively cultural scene, in the heart of the Ruhr area and easy transportation links to other cities, Bochum is the perfect starting point to get to know the whole region of North-Rhine Westphalia.
